About Us
Mission Statement
BTC Elements provides sustainable products that are high quality and stylish,
inspiring consumers to create an earth friendly and socially conscious
lifestyle. We strive to channel the power of the consumer into a path that
creates broad prosperity for the shopper, the producer, and the environment.
About the Founder, Summer Bowen
Summer concentrated on issues of environmental education and social justice
while obtaining her degree in Sociology at UC Berkeley. She worked in the
fashion industry during those college years and for four years as a
middle-school teacher following her graduation. As a working professional, she
was looking to be a responsible consumer and wanted goods that came from a
reliable source and were easy on the environment without compromising style or
functionality. Through diligent and ongoing research she has discovered
innovative manufacturers and producers around the world. She decided to
streamline the process for likeminded consumers and so - out of her life
experiences and passions - BTC Elements was born.

Why should I shop BTC Elements?
In addition to providing products that are earth friendly and socially
conscious, our items are also stylish and of high quality. We want our customers
to have total peace of mind that they are using consumer power in a beneficial
way when shopping at our site. Our goal is to make a thoughtful choice an easy
reality.
What is your definition of earth friendly?
As you read each of our product descriptions, you will also see disclosed a
great deal of information about that product. Every item at BTC has been
carefully selected because of its impact on the earth and its people. Our
natural products are either third-party certified organic or made from a plant
that does not require the use of pesticides. Many of our fabrics are created out
of recycled or reused materials. We also encourage reuse by offering products
that are well-made and long lasting.
What exactly does ‘socially conscious’ mean?
All BTC products are guaranteed either to have been made in the USA or to be
fairly traded. To ensure the latter, we only source through companies that have
been screened and approved by the Fair Trade Federation. This will limit the
products that we can carry; however, it is the only way we can ensure the
welfare of the workers. All of our products have detailed information as to
where and how they are made. By following these strict standards, we ensure that
each of your purchases will be a small step towards a remedy of the inequities
created by economic globalization.
What is Fair Trade?
As defined by the Fair Trade Federation: “Fair Trade means an equitable and fair
partnership between marketers in North America and producers in Asia, Africa,
Latin America, and other parts of the world. A fair trade partnership works to
provide low-income artisans and farmers with a living wage for their work.” The
criteria for joining the Fair Trade Federation are the following:
Paying a fair wage in the local context
Offering employees opportunities for advancement
Providing equal employment opportunities for all people, particularly the most
disadvantaged
Engaging in environmentally sustainable practices
Being open to public accountability
Building long-term trade relationships
Providing healthy and safe working conditions within the local context
Providing financial and technical assistance to producers whenever possible
There is not yet a fair trade certification process in place for manufactured
goods as there is for some foods. However, the Fair Trade Federation has an
extensive screening and approving process for its members.
